OK! Magazine interview10 YEARS ON AND LOOKING EVEN HOTTER (November 2007)
SHANE, NICKY, MARK AND KIAN TALK LOVE AND MARRIAGE, AMY AND POSH - AND REVEAL WHO'S THE BEST DRINKER AND COOK.
Good grief we knew those Westlife boys were a bunch of hunks but just look at them in these pictures! We have to admit there were a few brows that needed mopping in the OK! office when we saw the results of our exclusive shoot with he boys on the River Thames. And to make them even more lustful theyíre just as delicious in the flesh and lovely lads to boot.
If you can believe it, Westlife have been together for nearly ten years, and in that time they have crooned many a ballad, hit many a high note on their infamous key change and collaborated with the likes of Mariah Carey, Diana Ross and Lulu.
Their private lives have been just as successful. Nicky Byrne, 29, and Shane Filan, 28, are both happily married and have already started families, while Kian Egan, 27, has been dating gorgeous Josdi Albert for nearly five years. Seven years in to the bands career, in 2005, Mark Feehily, 27, came out as gay and admits itís been the best thing he ever did: 'My life got umpteen times better. Itís changed things totally as I feel so much happier and at ease. Iím gay and I'm very proud of who I am.' Heís now made a happy home with model and singer Kevin McDaid.
At the moment the boys are back on the scene with a new song, Home, a cover of Michael Bubleís hit Home. Here we find out about how they deal with homesickness when theyíre on tour, why Mark is the best member to go on the lash with and what they think of the Spice Girls reunion...
Kian, you and Jodi are always being asked if you are getting married - does that sort of thing affect you?
Jodi and I have always just felt really normal. We stayed away from the attention because we've never wanted to be a celebrity couple. When Jodi was in Hollyoaks it would've been easy to show up at every red carpet event, but thatís not who we are.
Mark, are you and Kevin ever going to get married?
We would if we ever got to that point where we wanted to. Kian and I get asked all the time and we probably will until we do. But honestly, if the situation does change, Iím sure we'll be so happy we'll be telling everyone in sight.
What do you think of the Spice Girls reunion?
Nicky: I think itís great. I havenít heard great reviews for their single, but everyone loves the Spice Girls. Victoria was the sexiest and Emma was always very cute. Victoria looks different now, though and, although sheís still got sex appeal, I think she looked better in the 2 Become 1 video. I've met her and sheís a great girl.
Their video for Headlines (Friendship Never Ends) is quite saucy considering it's for Children In Need...
Nicky: I haven't seen the video but I saw the picture of Victoria in the papers. Itís a shame that how saucy Victoria looks is more important than Children In Need!
Youíve always had a clean-cut image, but with people like Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse dominating the papers, it's not that way anymore...
Nicky: There have always been rock 'n' roll elements to pop bands, but ten or 15 years ago it just didnít make the papers. Now itís the only thing people talk about. Mark: Iíve been a big Amy Winehouse fan for years - way before anyone had really heard of her. Itís sad because Iíve met her and sheís a lovely, intelligent, nice person, but the person you read about is the bleeding, drunk, drugged up Amy Winehouse. Thereís a lot more to her.
Looking like that does set a bit of a bad example when sheís considered a role model donít you think?
Nicky: With Amy, itís a case of if she has a problem and she needs help. Thatís the sad part for me. But itís not ok in my opinion to look like an absolute wreck.
You boys have been together for nearly a decade and must know each other inside out. So whoís the easiest person to wind up?
Kian: Nicky. He definitely gets the most frustrated. But Shane is very easy to wind up.
Whoís the best drinking partner?
Nicky: Shane is a completely different person when heís drunk. He is very funny when heís had a drink!
Kian: It would fall between Mark and Shane but I'd give Mark the upper hand. When Mark and I go out we still act as though we're 19!
Whoís the best listener?
Nicky: I think because Shane is a dad too we have good chats about family stuff. Shaneís on my page where that stuff is concerned.
Shane: Nicky and I have some good chats about being dads - and about everything really.
Mark: Nickyís great to go to for a rant!
Whose house would you most likely go to for home cooking?
Mark: Iíd say if you want to stay alive then Kian. If you don't mind dying then Shane! But Iím lucky. Kevin is a great chef - itís like having Gordon Ramsey in the kitchen.
Whoís the most vain?
Kian: Thatís becoming a very big thing in Westlife! Itís not about who takes the longest to get ready, its more whoís the fussiest about pictures once theyíve been taken. But I donít care. I look the way I look and thatís that.
The new single Home is about being away from the people closest to you. How do you cope with it when youíre on tour?
Mark: We make sure we donít spend too long away. It used to be months on end but now the record company knows that if we donít have a weekend off here and there there'll be a row!
Nicky: We have spent a lot of time abroad in the past but nowadays I try to make sure Georgina and the boys are with me. But if they canít then you just get your head down and get on with it.
What do you miss most when you are away from home?
Kian: As much as itís really hard to be away from my family and Jodi, I deal with it by getting out and about and exploring. So if we're somewhere new I get up and go investigating about the place.
Shane: I miss my family and thatís why I take them away. I canít be away from them for long at all otherwise I literally go off my head!
